The first, brewed, and decaf estimates come from Mayo Clinic. The two-shot value is simple multiplication, not a new laboratory result. A real double can use a different basket dose and does not have to equal two independent 1-ounce singles. The milk and water rows contain no standalone estimate because those ingredients do not establish the caffeine; the espresso recipe does.

Per ounce is not the same as per drink

Espresso contains more caffeine per ounce than brewed coffee in the reference table. Divide 63 milligrams by one ounce and the concentration is 63 milligrams per ounce. Divide 96 milligrams by eight ounces and brewed coffee is 12 milligrams per ounce. That makes espresso more than five times as caffeine-dense in this example.

Coffee species and dose influence the available caffeine

Caffeine begins in the dry coffee. More coffee generally makes more caffeine available for extraction, all else equal. Species also matters. Caffeine extracts readily, but shot length still matters

Caffeine is water-soluble and extracts relatively readily. A ristretto made with less beverage yield may contain somewhat less caffeine than a longer espresso from the same dry dose, but it is not caffeine-free and the difference is not fixed. A lungo may extract more caffeine from that dose, yet coffee, grind, flow, and total contact all influence the result.

Do not use taste intensity as a caffeine meter. A short ristretto can taste dense while containing less total beverage. A diluted Americano can taste mild while carrying two or three shots. Milk can soften bitterness and concentration without removing a milligram already extracted.

The only reliable café shortcut is published nutrition data tied to the exact drink size and customization. Otherwise, count shots, use a disclosed per-shot estimate, and preserve the range in your head.

Lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos inherit their shot caffeine

A latte is not low-caffeine merely because it contains a large volume of milk. If the drink uses two shots, it carries the caffeine those shots supplied. The milk changes volume, nutrition, temperature, and perceived intensity. It does not neutralize caffeine.

A cappuccino with one shot and a latte with one shot have roughly the same caffeine when the espresso is the same, despite different milk and foam. A flat white may carry more caffeine than a latte at one café because it uses an extra or ristretto shot; at another café the counts may match. Decaf means much less, not necessarily zero

The Mayo table lists about 1 milligram in a 1-ounce decaf espresso.
