Methodology

The short version

We first remove setups that miss your must-have limits, such as budget and counter size. Then we sort the setups that remain by your drinks and routine. The receipt shows the sources, matching-rule version, assumptions, and main downside behind the result. This matches equipment to your needs. It does not rank taste.

What the evidence labels mean

Manufacturer

A product detail or claim published by the manufacturer for the named U.S. model.

Authorized retailer

A price, warranty, or regional product detail from a named authorized U.S. seller.

Estimated

A value calculated from the inputs we show. It is not a measured product fact.

We could not confirm this

A conflict, missing field, or unclear measurement that we could not resolve without guessing.

How we add a product to the catalog

1. Identify the exact U.S. model, stock keeping unit (SKU) when public, voltage, and product generation.
2. Use the manufacturer page or specification sheet first for physical and technical facts.
3. Use an authorized retailer for regional price or warranty when the manufacturer does not publish it.
4. Keep the source wording for claims such as warm-up time. Do not make the claim stronger.
5. Record the URL, publisher, source label, and checked date for every source.
6. Keep conflicting or missing dimensions as not confirmed. Do not average incompatible measurements.

Required limits come before scores

A required limit is a must-have condition. We remove a setup when any of these checks fails:

• Estimated setup total exceeds your budget. Tax, shipping, and ongoing costs may be extra.
• Known stored size or space needed to use it exceeds your width, depth, or height limit.
• The machine's back-to-back capacity (how many drinks it can make in one session) is below the requested session size.
• A separate grinder does not support the machine's known portafilter size.
• We could not confirm required machine dimensions.

An unlisted grinder you already own can still produce a conditional match. We exclude its price. We do not confirm its size, portafilter fit, or espresso compatibility, so check those details before you buy.

For a separate machine and grinder, we add both listed widths and an estimated 1.5-inch working gap. Space needed to use it is the room a machine needs while you use or refill it. We use a published depth for use when one exists. If a source gives only the closed body depth, the setup can pass with a visible warning about working space. Height is the taller product. How we rank matches

Matching-rule version 1.2.0 starts every eligible setup at 50 points. It then applies fixed weights for your drink profile—milk drinks, 58 mm baskets for espresso-first users, or mixed—plus session capacity, effort preference, and grinder adjustment band. A mismatch with your effort preference subtracts points. Spending more of your budget never adds points. Ties go to the lower estimated setup total.

These weights are our matching policy. They are not lab measurements and do not prove cup quality. Each result shows up to three reasons, the machine downside, source warnings, and the full point breakdown. You can see why the model reached its result.

What happens when nothing fits

A setup that misses a required limit never becomes a recommendation. When no setup passes every limit, Find my setup shows the closest options by the fewest failed limit categories and the smallest change. It shows the exact extra budget or space needed and any session reduction before you can apply an option. Applying an option changes the answers we show and runs the matching calculation again. It does not waive a required limit.

Cost and payback math

• Hardware total = checked catalog machine price + checked catalog grinder price, except an owned catalog grinder you select is counted at $0.
• Setup total = hardware total + an estimated $90 allowance for basic setup items.
• Beans = 18 g per drink at $16 per pound.
• Milk = $0 for espresso, $0.48 for milk drinks, or $0.24 for a mixed profile.
• Water, energy, and cleaning allowance = $0.20 per drink.
• Monthly drinks = weekly café drinks × 52 ÷ 12.
• Break-even months = setup total ÷ ((café price − home variable cost) × monthly drinks).

Break-even is omitted when the inputs do not produce positive estimated savings. The model excludes resale value, financing, repairs, labor, tax, shipping, wasted coffee while learning, and café purchases you continue to make.

We subtract an owned grinder only when you select an exact catalog model. Its listed footprint, adjustment band, source records, and portafilter compatibility remain in the calculation. We remove only its purchase price. We exclude integrated-grinder machines from this path because buying a second built-in grinder would not be a like-for-like machine-only recommendation.

Versioning and corrections

Result receipts carry a model version and catalog version. A price refresh can change eligibility without changing the scoring policy. A model-version change means the matching logic or assumptions changed. Material corrections follow the corrections policy.
