What “bottomless” and “naked” mean
A bottomless portafilter lets you watch espresso leave the basket, because it has no spout underneath. A portafilter is the handled holder that locks into the group head. The group head is the machine part that delivers water to the basket.
A basket is the perforated metal cup that holds ground coffee. The underside of the basket stays open, so you can watch the coffee flow as it leaves the puck.
“Naked portafilter” means the same thing as “bottomless portafilter.” You'll see both terms below.
A puck is the compressed coffee in the basket. The dose is the amount of ground coffee in the basket. Tamping means pressing the grounds flat and even. Channeling means water finds easier paths through the puck instead of moving evenly.
Output weight is the weight of the drink in the cup. Extraction yield is the percentage of the dry coffee that dissolves into the drink. You can't measure extraction yield by watching the flow.
A pressurized (dual-wall) basket adds resistance through the basket itself. A non-pressurized (single-wall) basket leans more on the coffee puck. Your basket changes what the bottomless view can tell you.
Is a bottomless portafilter worth it?
It can be, if you want to watch the flow while you polish a repeatable recipe. You may want to see whether flow starts on one side, or whether several little jets show up. A pattern like that can tell you to inspect your prep.
It helps less when:
- The manufacturer has not confirmed the fit.
- You use a pressurized basket and do not want to change your routine.
- Your grinder cannot make repeatable espresso grinds.
- You need to serve two cups from one shot.
- You prefer the cleaner routine of a spouted portafilter.
- The machine manual limits the accessory setup.
It's a bit like an oven door with a glass panel: you get to watch, and the recipe stays the same. Read what you see alongside dose, output weight, time, taste, and repeatability. Start with the exact-fit table below.
Check exact fit first
Use the portafilter size chart to look up your exact machine, check a part number, and open the manufacturer source.
Fit takes more than a matching diameter. Locking tabs, group shape, basket depth, handle position, seal, and model revision can all differ.
The table uses four evidence labels:
- Manufacturer lists this model or accessory: the manufacturer names the exact model, model code, group head, or included accessory.
- Manufacturer supports this family or group: the manufacturer supports the machine family or group, and the exact revision or accessory match still needs confirming.
- Size known; fit not confirmed: a reliable record gives the basket diameter, and no exact accessory match was confirmed.
- No fit decision: the diameter, model match, or accessory source is missing.
A 51 mm, 54 mm, 57 mm, or 58 mm label is only a starting point. Do not infer exact fit from that number alone.

How to choose a bottomless portafilter
Choose the holder the manufacturer lists for your exact machine or group head. Fit comes first. After that, compare the basket, cleaning needs, return terms, and whether you need two cups from one shot. Do not choose a lower price when fit is unknown.

A flow pattern can point you to a check. It can't confirm channeling or one exact cause.
When a bottomless portafilter sprays
Spray is a reason to pause and check your setup. It is not a complete diagnosis.
A bottomless holder can send hot water and coffee outside the cup. Assume spray is hot and keep your hands away from it. If spray begins, stop the shot as the exact machine manual directs.
The Gaggia Classic Pro E24 manual says not to remove the pressurized filter holder while brewing. That warning applies to that holder and does not confirm a bottomless fit. For another machine, follow its exact manual.

- Check the basket rim, dose, ground-coffee spread, tamping, and basket condition.
- Repeat the same dose, output weight, timing, and preparation.

Uneven puck prep can open up easier paths. Dose, basket fit, machine setup, and other details can also play a part. We have not performed a controlled taste comparison or physical test of a bottomless portafilter. Do not treat spray as proof of one exact cause.

Neither one wins for everyone. Your machine, basket, grinder, cleanup routine, and how many cups you pour decide it.
Match the basket and grinder
You still need the right basket with a bottomless holder.
A pressurized basket uses its basket assembly to add resistance after water passes through the coffee. It can help with pre-ground coffee or a grinder that can't make fine espresso adjustments. Its visible flow is not a direct test of the puck.
A single-wall basket uses the coffee puck as the main resistance, so dose and puck prep need to repeat. A grinder that makes repeatable espresso grinds makes the visual check more useful. You don't need one particular grinder model or setting.
Switching from a pressurized basket to a single-wall basket? Start a new recipe. Confirm the basket’s dose range, set a weighed output target, and move into the grinder’s espresso range. The old setting won't carry over on its own.

Safety and cleanup
Follow the exact machine and accessory manuals. Espresso equipment uses hot water and pressure. Treat spray and coffee as hot.
The Gaggia Classic Pro E24 U.S. manual gives general hot-water and pressure warnings. Its squirt warning covers the “crema perfetta” filter without its frothing jet. It does not confirm a bottomless fit or apply to every machine, and other machines can have different instructions.
For routine cleanup, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. After pressure is released and the holder is cool, knock out the puck, rinse the basket and metal holder, and dry them as directed. Check the handle material before soaking it or using a cleaning product. Do not assume every accessory can use the same cleaning method.

Common questions
Does a bottomless portafilter improve taste?
Not by itself. A bottomless holder does not guarantee better taste. It changes what you can see. No controlled taste comparison in the reviewed sources supports a taste claim. Taste still depends on the coffee, recipe, basket, grinder, water, temperature, and preparation. Use taste and repeatable measurements to judge a recipe.
Why does a bottomless portafilter spray?
Spray shows liquid leaving the basket in several paths or jets. It calls for a check of puck preparation, dose, basket condition, and machine setup. Spray does not prove one exact cause.
Is spraying always channeling?
No. Channeling is uneven water flow through the puck, but a spray pattern alone does not prove channeling. Repeat the recipe and inspect preparation before changing the grind.

Can a bottomless portafilter split one shot?
