Reduce resistance with one controlled coarser-grind test while holding dose and beverage yield constant.

Evidence boundary

This guide translates measured recipe inputs and user-observed taste or flow into a conservative next experiment. It does not measure extraction yield, see the puck, detect channeling, or physically test your equipment.

Confirm the restriction

Record dry dose, beverage mass, and time. A long timer reading is only comparable when the shot was allowed to reach the same target yield. Also confirm that the machine is warm, the basket is clean, and the dose is appropriate for the basket.

A stalled shot may stress the puck into uneven flow. The goal is not to force a long extraction to completion at any cost.

Open the grind one step

Move one small, repeatable step coarser while keeping dose, target yield, and preparation stable. The next shot should reach the same output with less resistance.

If the grinder has large stepped adjustments, document the step and judge the resulting flow before changing another variable. Exact numbers from a different grinder are not transferable.

  • Same dose and target yield.
  • One small grinder step coarser.
  • Same distribution and tamp.
  • Stop if the machine or pump behaves outside manufacturer guidance.

If coarser does not restore flow

Check basket dose range, blocked holes, grinder behavior, coffee freshness, machine cleanliness, and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions. Espresso Receipt cannot diagnose a mechanical fault from time and taste.

If flow becomes fast but the cup remains harsh, return to the most repeatable setting and test yield separately rather than continuing to move the grinder.

Questions, answered without fake certainty

Is a 45-second espresso always bad?

No universal time makes a shot good or bad. In this tool, 45 seconds is a conservative signal that resistance deserves inspection when the same measured target yield is being compared.

Should I tamp more lightly?

A level, repeatable tamp is more useful than trying to tune pressure by feel. Use grind as the first controlled resistance adjustment after confirming the dose fits the basket.

Could the machine be blocked?

Yes. If water flow is abnormal without coffee or the machine behaves outside its instructions, stop and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning or service guidance.
