Match the tablet to the cleaning job
Choose a cleaning tablet your machine maker approves, then use the exact cleaning cycle in your manual. For a U.S./Canada Breville Barista Express BES870 covered by the X26 booklet, Breville lists BEC25000US1 tablets and a cycle using the supplied cleaning disc. A descaling alert needs its own procedure.
Breville's tablet page names the BES870 under “Works With.” It describes removing coffee oils and residue from the shower screen (the water outlet above the coffee) and baskets. That confirms a product match for this example; it doesn't give every Breville model the same button sequence.
We have no ownership, physical testing, taste tests or measured-performance evidence for this procedure. The instructions below come from the named manual and product records. The photo illustrates an espresso machine; it doesn't identify the reviewed model or show cleaning.
Read the alert before opening the packet
Match the light to your exact booklet before handling a tablet. In Breville's BES870 U.S./Canada X26 manual, printed pages 22 and 23 distinguish these jobs:
| What you see on that BES870 | Job | Where the cleaner goes |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light | Cleaning cycle for the parts that carry brewed coffee | One cleaning tablet on the supplied disc in the 1 CUP basket |
| Solid CLEAN / DESCALE light | Descaling for mineral buildup | Follow the separate descaling instructions and specified descaling product |
| Different controls, model or light pattern | Identify the correct manual first | Do not choose a chemical or cycle from this example |
If the solid light is your problem, follow the model-specific descaling guide. Wand cleaning and tank water-filter replacement are separate maintenance jobs too. Keep each one beside its own manual instruction.
Check the label with the machine cool
Write down your machine model, country, manual revision and cleaner code. For the example here, the note reads “BES870, U.S./Canada, X26, BEC25000US1.” Compare those details with your own machine and packet before proceeding. This identification check is unperformed editorial guidance, and a different result means you need the matching instructions.
Handle the chemical as its label directs. Breville's linked BEC250 safety sheet identifies BEC25000US1 and warns of serious eye irritation. It calls for suitable gloves and eye protection, handwashing after handling, and keeping the product away from children. Do not taste cleaning liquid or mix cleaners.
For handling or washing parts, follow the BES870 safeguards: stop operation, switch off, unplug and allow the machine to cool. Do not remove the portafilter, the handled basket holder, while the machine operates under pressure. Stop and contact Breville if the supplied disc is missing, the product identity differs or your manual doesn't match.
Run the BES870 X26 cycle
Follow printed page 22 of the X26 booklet for this exact model and market. Assemble the machine correctly before reconnecting power for the cycle. Keep hands clear of hot water and leave the portafilter locked throughout operation.
- Fit the 1 CUP basket into the portafilter. Add the supplied cleaning disc and one cleaning tablet.
- Lock the portafilter into the group head, where the handle attaches. Put a large container beneath its spouts.
- Fill the tank with cold water and empty the drip tray.
- Use POWER to switch the machine off.
- Press 1 CUP and 2 CUP together, then POWER. Hold all three for approximately 10 seconds, as this booklet specifies.
- Let the cycle finish. Breville gives approximately five minutes, with intermittent water flow and two completion beeps.
- Follow the manual's safe removal precautions and check that the tablet dissolved. If it remains, repeat the cleaning cycle as directed.
Before washing the removed parts, switch off, unplug and let them cool. Remove the disc and rinse the basket and portafilter thoroughly, following the booklet's care instructions and the cleaner label. Finish all required rinsing before making coffee. If the cycle won't complete or the instructions conflict with your machine, stop and ask Breville for help.
Keep your own maintenance note
Record the cleaner code, manual revision, date and whether the cycle completed. If something differs, describe the exact light pattern and controls when you contact support. You don't need to guess a replacement tablet or invent another button combination.
Keep the maker's instructions with that note. When you're ready for ordinary brewing again, the dial-in guide helps you return to your coffee recipe.
Use the separate mineral-scale procedure when your exact manual identifies a descaling alert.

How we researched this
We use manufacturer, standards group, government, and authorized-retailer records when available. We label a hands-on result as an observed test only when we name the exact product and test it. A checked price shows what the seller listed on the check date. It can change after that date, and your delivered total may differ.
